Must the electoral vote system changed?

This system was adopted when USA had only 13 states and I understand the reason but I think it is obsolete now due to time zoning (by the time the pacific states begin counting their votes, the new president was already elected) and other cirstances. Don't you think that our president should be the one who gets the most citizens' votes to avoid another George Bush Jr fiasco?
