Change energy saver?

Is it possible to change the old home use energy saver with a new digital energy saver by oneself without asking a professional for help? The one I have is the old type mechanic one that makes noise, but it controls both the heating and cooling systems. Is it expensive to buy one and how much is the fee for installment labor? Thanks.
